On Monday, 25 March, the F1 in Schools 2019/20 season was launched at Parramatta Marist in style. Mr Pauschmann (Principal) and Dr Bateman (Head of Maths and Science) raced their own aerodynamic masterpieces head to head down the 20 metre track, which ran down the middle of assembly. Dr Bateman’s “Flying Doctor” won the first heat, with an extremely fast reaction time. Despite this promising start, the doctor was ultimately undone by the green and gold blur of Mr Pauschmann’s “Mark One”, which took out the inaugural title with a lightning raw time of 1.206 seconds. On Tuesday, 26 February, 32 students from PMHS and CMC gathered in the Hive to launch F1 in Schools for the 2019/20 season. F1 in Schools is an international competition in which students engineer a balsa car to travel 20 meters in less than one second.
Throughout 2018, 16 students from a combined PMHS and Catherine McAuley Westmead Campus team met weekly to prepare a submission into the qualifying round of the Australian Space Design Competition (ASDC). It was the first time either school had competed in ASDC, and after what could best be described as a struggle with the project brief, the team pulled through, and was selected as one of the top ten teams from 23 entrants. Subsequently, we qualified for the National Finals of the Competition, sending a team of twelve students to the University of Queensland on the 18th of January 2019.
