Schools give voice to turning point in Parramatta history with new play set to debut at Riverside
A captivating new play by Cate Whittaker will have its world premiere at Riverside Theatre on Wednesday 24 July. ‘Forgotten’ sheds light on one of the most famous convict uprisings in Australian history at the Parramatta Female Factory.
The production by CAPTIVATE, the creative and performing arts program for Catholic schools in the Diocese of Parramatta, features a community of actors from Western Sydney including students from Catherine McAuley Westmead, Nagle College Blacktown, Parramatta Marist and St Pauls Catholic College Greystanes, as well as graduates of the CAPTIVATE program.
Elizabeth Lowrencev, Drama teacher at Catherine McAuley Westmead, will lead the ensemble in the thought-provoking play which explores the resilience, courage and legacy of the incarcerated convict women who fought bravely for their rights.
The story of the 1827 uprising at the Parramatta Female Factory, recently included on the National Heritage Register, provides insight into local history too. CAPTIVATE teacher Lucinda Armour is excited about the opportunity for students to share this powerful story about passionate women fighting for their rights.
“We’re so proud that our students are bringing history to life on stage in the heart of Parramatta,” Lucinda said.
The show will run from 24 - 27 July 2019, tickets available through Riverside Theatre.
