AUSTRALIAN THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE - Scholarship Program
Yr 10 Captivate Drama students from Parramatta Marist, Mateo Soriano and Joseph Khalil, were lucky recipients of scholarships placements to the Australian Theatre for Young People’s SCREEN ACTING program in January.
“This ATYP opportunity was a phenomenal experience. The week long program consisted of training in acting for the screen and the components that factor into a good performance.” explained Mateo.
Joined by Captivate Ensemble members Ioanna Hatziandreou and Denica Brillo from Nagle College Blacktown the students immersed themselves in skills such as voice and tone (and how these vary from live theatre performance), approaches to naturalism on screen, as well as the technician staging aspects of screen performance. Working in front of a camera can be daunting for actors trained in stage skills but programs such as these give young performers the experience and feedback needed to improve and succeed.
“We also had the opportunity to learn how to do a cold read,” shared Joseph, “and how best to express yourself when being filmed. Some of my favourite memories of the week were getting to know so many new people who all have the same interests as you. Having this experience has certainly helped me as a drama student”
The ongoing collaboration between Captivate and the ATYP continues to offer Parramatta Marist and CEDP students outstanding creative opportunities.
